8 Notes
of Nathaniel Dett Chorale Impact
This May and June we’re sharing the reasons your support matters through 8 Notes of Nathaniel Dett Chorale Impact. Every dollar brings us closer to our $8,000 goal.
Donate to keep us singing!1. Preserving a Unique Cultural Legacy
The Chorale is Canada’s first professional choral group dedicated specifically to Afrocentric music. By donating, you help preserve the vast spectrum of African Diasporic music, including spirituals, gospel, jazz, and blues, ensuring these traditions are not only remembered but performed at the highest professional level.
2. Honouring a Canadian Icony
The ensemble is named after R. Nathaniel Dett, a Canadian-born Black composer and champion of African-American folk music. Your support keeps the legacy of this trailblazing musician alive, celebrating his contribution to classical music and his roots in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
3. Bridging Communities Through Music
The Chorale’s core mission is to “build bridges of understanding, appreciation, and acceptance between communities.” In an era of social division, your donation funds performances that use the universal language of music to foster empathy and shared human experience.
4. Educational Outreach and Mentorship
Donations directly fund educational programs and masterclasses. The Chorale provides a platform for young Black musicians to see themselves reflected in the professional choral world, offering mentorship that helps diversify the future of the Canadian arts scene.
5. High-Level Artistic Excellence
These are not just hobbyists—the Chorale consists of 21 highly trained, professional vocalists. They have shared the stage with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and performed for world leaders like Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and at the inauguration of Barack Obama.
6. Supporting Canadian Content and Composers
The Chorale frequently commissions new works and performs pieces by Indigenous and diverse Canadian creators. Your gift supports the creation of new art that reflects the modern, multicultural reality of Canada.
7. Promoting Historical Awareness
Through productions like Africville Stories and the opera Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom, the Chorale uses music to educate the public about Black history and the struggle for civil rights. Supporting them is a vote for “art-as-education.”
8. Amplifying Marginalized Voices
In the traditional “classical” canon, the contributions of Black composers have historically been sidelined or ignored. Your donation provides a powerful platform for these voices to be heard in world-class concert halls. By supporting the Chorale, you are actively participating in decolonizing the arts and ensuring that the full breadth of human creativity is recognized and celebrated.
